Two Major Causes of the Civil War
In the early 1800’s, the United States of America was going through many changes. People were disagreeing about a lot of issues such as state’s rights, slavery, the election of a new president, and the economy. All of these issues would eventually lead the country to the Civil War. Although there were many reasons, the two major causes of the Civil War were state’s rights and slavery.
The first major cause of the Civil War was the disagreement about state’s rights. The North wanted a strong federal government. As stated in “The Roots of Conflict”, the author states that, “Members of the Federalist Party supported the idea of a strong central government.” The South thought that the federal government was too involved in their business. Also stated in “The Roots of Conflict”, the author states that, “They were especially concerned that the federal government might try to control slavery in the south.”
The second major cause of the Civil War was the disagreement about slavery. The North did not believe in slavery, and wanted it to be abolished. In the article titled “Abolitionists ‘Build’ an Underground Railroad”, the author states, “Northern abolitionists felt very strongly that all slavery should be abolished forever.” However, the South wanted slavery and needed it for their economy. Also in the article titled “Abolitionists ‘Build’ an Underground Railroad”, the author states that plantation owners needed slaves to work on their large farms, and they were important to the Southern way of life.
Although there were many reasons, the two major causes of the Civil War were state’s rights and slavery. The North and the South disagreed on the issue of state’s rights. The North wanted the federal government to be in control, but the South wanted the states to have more power. On the issue of slavery, the North wanted slavery abolished, but the South wanted slavery to be legal. These two major issues are what led the United States to the Civil War.
