Two Major Causes of the Civil War
During the early 1800’s, the United States was having difficulties and conflicts between the states, which would eventually lead to war. Some of the conflicts were issues such as slavery, state’s rights, land ownership, the election of a new President, and the economy. Although there were many arguments, slavery and state’s rights were the two major causes of the Civil War.
The first major cause of the Civil War was slavery. The North and the South disagreed on the issue of slavery. The Northerners thought slavery was wrong and wanted it abolished. In the article “Abolitionists ‘Build’ an Underground Railroad”, the author states that, “Northerners believed slavery was wrong.” Also stated in the article, they wanted slavery to be abolished forever. On the other hand, the South supported slavery because it helped their economy. Slaves were needed for agriculture. Also in the same article, the author states that slaves were needed by plantation owners to work on their large farms. As the author states, “Many Southerners felt that slavery was a necessary part of the Southern way of life and economy.”
The second major cause of the Civil War was the issue of state’s rights. The North and the South also disagreed about state’s rights. The North wanted a strong federal government. In the article “The Roots of Conflict”, the author states that, “Many people in the North supported a strong federal government...” However, the South did not want a strong federal government. Also stated in “The Roots of Conflict”, the Southern states thought that the government was too involved in their business. The author states, “...most Southerners believed each state should have the right to make certain decisions for itself.”
Although there were many arguments, slavery and state’s rights were the two major causes of the Civil War. On the issue of slavery, the North wanted it abolished, while the South supported slavery.
